With this question, our CTO Philipp Kemper kicked off our internal IT conference at CHECK24 — addressing a topic that's currently on everyone's mind in the industry.
When a hundred developers from a wide range of teams across Germany come together in one place, it's no longer just about new frameworks or the latest AI tools. It's about finding answers together to the questions that are changing our daily work. The CHECK.conf Academy provided the perfect setting for exactly that: with expert workshops and plenty of opportunities to discover new perspectives beyond team boundaries.

One central insight echoed throughout the event: AI is changing the way we develop software, but it doesn't replace what makes good software development. On the contrary: the more powerful the tools become, the more important the skills of the people using them. Understanding architecture, critically questioning code, and taking responsibility for quality remain indispensable. After all, it's not AI that's responsible for a great customer experience and clean features — it's us. That's exactly why quality and technical understanding remain front and center.
One message from Philipp's keynote really stuck: Skills × AI = Output 💡
AI isn't a replacement for strong developer skills - it's a multiplier. Almost everyone has access to AI these days. The differentiating factor is skills: the stronger your technical understanding, the greater the value you can create with AI. Those who don't regularly use their fundamental skills risk skill atrophy in the long run - the gradual loss of important competencies.
The guiding principle of maintaining fundamental technical skills for the long term shaped the entire agenda of the CHECK.conf Academy. In hands-on workshops, participants deepened their foundations across a wide range of areas: from Infrastructure as Code, Docker, and Web Applications to Security, Observability, and MySQL, all the way to Domain-Driven Design. Because anyone who wants to use AI successfully needs more than just powerful tech tools - above all, they need a strong technical foundation
The two days made one thing clear: the present of software development is shaped by AI. What matters, however, is not whether we use it, but how.
