Dominik has been working as a working student in DevOps Engineering at CHECK24 Rental Car in Augsburg since July 2024. In the interview, he talks about his daily work, the technologies he uses, and what’s on his bucket list.
Hi, I’m Dominik, 24 years old, and since July 2024, I’ve been working as a Working Student in DevOps Engineering at CHECK24 Car Rentals in Augsburg. I am currently studying Computer Science at the University of Applied Sciences Augsburg. Before my studies, I completed an apprenticeship as an Electronics Technician for Industrial Engineering and later pursued further training as a state-certified Technician in Computer Science.
My workday starts at 7:00 AM with breakfast and a cup of tea in the office. I then check the "root" emails of our servers for important system messages. If there are no issues, I move on to our Kanban board to prioritize the tasks of the day. This includes automating recurring tasks, developing small tools, and adjusting system configurations. Just before finishing, I document my progress and prepare open tasks for the next day.
The key technologies in our DevOps team include tools like the configuration management tool "Salt," which we use to automate the management and configuration of our server infrastructure. Additionally, we rely on monitoring tools like Grafana and Kibana to continuously monitor our applications. For automation and scripting, we use Bash for smaller tasks and Python for more complex implementations. Modern container technologies like Docker provide the necessary flexibility and scalability for our infrastructure.
At CHECK24, I have the opportunity to work on real problems while continuously developing my knowledge and skills.
Dominik, Working Student in DevOps Engineering
During my apprenticeship, I gained knowledge in controlling industrial systems using programmable logic controllers (PLCs) and logic gates. I then learned "real" programming during my technician training—using C# for object-oriented programming and C for hardware-oriented development.
I enjoy working at CHECK24 because I can directly apply the theoretical knowledge from my studies in practice. I particularly appreciate the collegial and supportive work environment—and of course, the regular company parties are a lot of fun!
First, I’d love to take a tour of Scandinavia — I enjoy the Nordic landscape and prefer a more temperate climate. Second, as an enthusiastic keyboard lover, I plan to build my own keyboard with a custom-designed PCB and case.
