David has been working at CHECK24 in Dortmund since 2020 and serves as a full-stack software developer for the "SteuerCHECK" product. In this interview, you can discover the exciting projects his team is currently working on and explore why taxes are enjoyable, despite common clichés.
Hi, I'm David, 26 years old, and I've been working at CHECK24 in Dortmund on the "SteuerCHECK" product since 2020. I began as a junior and now contribute to the team as a senior full-stack software developer. I originally come from the Hochsauerland district, where I completed an apprenticeship and worked as a CMS software developer for some time before joining CHECK24.
My tasks are varied and diverse. They range from developing new software functionalities, ensuring quality and user experience through bug fixes and continuous improvements, co-planning software architectures, to implementing infrastructural changes. However, my primary focus is on the aspects visible to the end customer, including the front end and the processes that occur in the background.
My typical working day starts with taking my daughter to childcare. Once I arrive at the office, I kick off the day with a morning coffee with the team. During this time, we discuss important tasks for the day ahead. Following that, we have a regular meeting to share updates and align on tasks that need attention.
Throughout the day, we handle various topics, monitor operations, and plan new tasks. I maintain constant communication with my colleagues. The opportunity to contribute ideas is highly valued, providing a chance to leverage individual strengths. Just before wrapping up for the day, I take time to prepare topics for the next day.

David, Senior Software Developer
As a small child, I always wanted to join the police force, but during my teenage years, my interest in computer games and graphic design led me to programming. I started with small, simple websites, but after acquiring new skills, I progressed to developing complex game extensions/modifications. Upon leaving school, I knew straight away that I wanted to become a software developer.
The most exciting and challenging project for me was rebuilding the entire customer center using an in-house developed technology. The Customer Center represents the aspect of the SteuerCHECK product visible to the customer, where they can manage and process their tax returns.
Throughout the project phase, we formulated new software architectures, revamped existing structures, and addressed issues identified in previous years. The project spanned several months, and thanks to the collaborative efforts within the team and the creative freedom granted, we successfully achieved an excellent product by introducing and testing various concepts. It was rewarding to observe that user experience (UX), meaning the impressions and experience for the end customer, remained the top priority.
For the future, major projects and clear goals have already been defined
It is an everyday topic that affects us all, but one that is not talked about or explained enough. While the subject of taxes is very extensive and sometimes complex, completing your tax return with the help of good software is simple and interesting. I look forward to receiving my annual tax refund every year.
I really appreciate the team and the working atmosphere. Support is provided wherever it's needed, and no one is left alone; there's always someone available to answer questions. I also find the benefits at this site to be exceptional. From enjoyable breaks at the table tennis table and monthly events to complimentary meals through catering and an extensive range of beverages, everything is provided.
