Tobias decided to specialize in the insurance sector after completing his degree in Business administration and initially worked as a generalist in bank sales. Now he works as a specialist for private health insurance. In the interview, he gives exciting tips on how to be successful in customer advice and tells us about his biggest challenge.

Hello Tobias, tell us briefly who you are and what you do at CHECK24.
Tobias:

My name is Tobias, I am 29 years old, and I work at CHECK24 as a specialist in private health insurance.

My professional career started 13 years ago at a regional bank, where I discovered my passion for customer consulting early on. After completing my specialist degree, I decided to specialize in the insurance sector and supported customers as a generalist in bank sales. I further developed my specialization for private health insurance at one of our insurance partners and have expanded my expertise daily since joining CHECK24.

What should you bring with you to be successful here in customer consulting?
Tobias:

First and foremost, you should have fun and a passion for customer consulting. It is essential that customers feel comfortable with us because the subject is a challenging one. You should also have a high-quality standard: Anyone can sell insurance - but not the right insurance for the customer. Specialist knowledge is also an advantage but is built up very quickly in this job, so coming from a similar position is fine.

What is special about your job at CHECK24?
Tobias:

Compared to my previous positions, I do not represent a single company but almost all providers on the market. So it is straightforward for the customer to find the right partner. I often feel like a tailor of made-to-measure suits. With us, there are no off-the-peg solutions that fit correctly across the board. Instead, we measure our customers as accurately as possible to tailor the perfect suit. So every day and each case are completely varied.

How has your job changed in recent years?
Tobias:

The Covid-19 period, in particular, has been a powerful driver of digitization in the industry. We are constantly working with product management and IT on innovative and user-friendly ways for customers to receive individual advice from us and to contact us at any time with questions. For example, we have also been offering video consulting for a few weeks, making the conversation even more personal.

Is there a customer experience that has particularly stuck in your memory?
Tobias:

Many inquiries have remained in my memory, especially in a positive way. We talk about personal matters in a very intimate way and gain deep insight into the everyday lives of our customers and their circumstances. You build up an excellent connection with some customers as a result.

The biggest challenge so far was a family with three children, where I had to put together an offer with several insurers. But, in the end, everything worked out very well, mainly due to the different levels of experience within our team, and above all, it was a lot of fun.

What advice would you give applicants for the job interview?
Tobias:

Be communicative, confident, authentic, and friendly. Have the confidence to take on a new challenge. It doesn’t matter if you have not yet had much private health insurance experience. The entire team will be happy to support you in your new task. Your induction will be comprehensive, and you can always ask colleagues for advice, even after your introduction. No one is “thrown in at the deep end” here.
