Philipp is Managing Director of accident insurance at CHECK24. He started in 2016 as a Junior Product Manager – today, he is responsible for the entire department. In the interview, he shares exciting insights into his daily work, talks about his career at CHECK24, and reveals what good leadership and teamwork mean to him.

Hello Philipp, please introduce yourself briefly.
Philipp:

Hi, I’m Philipp, and I’ve been working at CHECK24 since 2016. After studying Business Administration and Marketing in Nuremberg and Groningen (Netherlands), I started as a Junior Product Manager in the accident insurance division at CHECK24. Over time, I was able to take on more responsibility, first becoming a Team Lead and then Head of Product. At the beginning of 2024, I took over as Managing Director, assuming overall responsibility for the accident insurance department.

What are your responsibilities as Managing Director in the accident insurance division?
Philipp:

As Managing Director, I am responsible for the overall success of the department. A stable and high-performing team is essential for this. One of my key tasks is to motivate, develop, and support my employees — how can I help them perform at their best every day?

I also deal with our key figures daily, analyze our performance, identify potential areas for optimization, and then discuss and implement them together with my team.
Specifically, this involves the continuous development of our comparison tool: What information do customers need? What are the latest trends, and how can we incorporate them? How can we guarantee even better customer service?

Another central part of my role is communicating with our partner insurance companies. This includes integrating new partners and developing existing ones. For example, we discuss potential updates to accident insurance policies or performance over the past months. For this, I travel a lot across Germany, meeting our business partners in person. Even in the age of Zoom and Teams, nothing is as efficient as face-to-face discussions — ideally over a good cup of coffee.

To sum it up: My role is highly diverse, different every day, and requires a lot of flexibility. And most of the time, things turn out completely differently than planned — which is exactly what makes it exciting!

What can you tell us about your career at CHECK24?
Philipp:

When I started as a Junior Product Manager, I was already able to develop features for our customers within a limited area of responsibility. I quickly discovered my passion for data and led internal focus groups for data analytics. Four years after joining, I took on my first leadership role. I was also gradually introduced to my current role as Managing Director. However, at the end of the day, it all comes down to one thing: "Just do it!"—The rest will follow naturally.

What past achievements in your team are you particularly proud of?
Philipp:

Many! My team has done fantastic work from the start, and working together is a pleasure every day.

However, I’d particularly like to highlight the evolution of our accident insurance comparison tool over the years. Today, we tailor our services much more individually to our customers and present them with policies that perfectly match their life situations. We have continuously refined this personalization: Factors such as profession, age, personal circumstances, history, and even sports activities now play a significantly larger role than before. Particularly suitable policies are dynamically highlighted and marked accordingly. This results in outstanding advisory quality, which our customers greatly appreciate.

We achieved this by focusing entirely on our customers. Only when we fully understand their needs can we offer them excellent customer service — 100% CHECK24.

How does CHECK24 support young leaders?
Philipp:

Firstly, by preparing them for leadership roles in a structured, targeted, and holistic way. There are various training programs covering different aspects — from technical topics to interpersonal leadership skills. Those who want to go further also have opportunities: At the beginning of my leadership journey, I took advantage of external coaching, which helped me a lot.

Regular exchange with other leaders at a similar level is also important. CHECK24 organizes regular events, dinners, and networking meetings for this purpose.

However, in my opinion, the most important factor is that you are given a high level of responsibility and trust from the very beginning. That is highly motivating, makes the job fun, and, at the end of the day, is the best form of leadership development.

And finally: What do you look forward to most when heading to work on Monday?
Philipp:

Looking forward to the upcoming projects this week – and starting the day with my team and a good coffee during our daily catch up.
