Patrick, Online Marketing Manager

Patrick has been an online marketing manager for the Mobile division in Cologne since 2019. He is responsible for all paid advertising measures on the web in the Performance Marketing team. His tasks include, for example, setting up new advertising campaigns or administering existing campaigns. In the interview, he reveals more about exciting projects and looks closely at his daily routine.

Hello Patrick, please introduce yourself.
Patrick:

Hi, I am Patrick from the Performance Marketing team in Cologne, and - as we say- I have been a "CHECKito" for the mobile sector since 2019. After finishing high school, I lived in Australia for a year to gain my first practical experience during a general management internship. After that, I briefly worked for an airline at Frankfurt Airport before I studied Media Management in Cologne. During my time at university, marketing fascinated me, which is why I completed an internship in online marketing at a fashion company once I graduated. Since then, I have been at CHECK24 with full vigor and commitment, trying to do my part every day to ensure the best possible experience for our customers.

What exactly are your tasks as an online marketing manager?
Patrick:

As an Online Marketing Manager, I am responsible for all paid advertising measures we promote on the web. That means I set up new advertising campaigns and administer existing ones. For example, as the most relevant player in the search engine sector, Google represents various marketing platforms that offer different advertising channels. Since my team and I are responsible for all paid online media, we also manage a marketing budget that needs to be invested wisely. Therefore, data-driven derivations of the individual campaign and channel performances are the be-all and end-all for us. This is the only way we can constantly optimize our performance and, at the same time, ensure that all relevant users are targeted at the right time and in the right place.

What does the first and last hour of your day look like?
Patrick:

The first hour of the day always looks similar to me. First, I talk to my colleagues about the latest topics, and then I get my "hello-wake-up-coffee" to start the day in a relaxed way. After that, I mainly deal with all maintenance topics crucial for our performance. This includes issues such as the functionality of our marketing feeds, account rejections, or other add-ons that could affect performance. After all, a flawless campaign setup is the most important thing for any performance marketer!

The last hour can vary from day to day. However, we usually finalize project-related milestones at the end of the day. However, the highlight at the end is a relaxed table tennis round with colleagues, which has become a regular part of the day. I enjoy connecting with my colleagues there, which creates a pleasant working atmosphere.

Are there any particularly exciting projects your team is currently working on?
Patrick:

As a team, we always strive to deliver the best possible user experience to the customer. That is why we are constantly working on new ways to determine which ad formats are the best way to pick up the customer or which message is the best way to reach them 100%. Projects such as restructuring our ad extensions or preparing for the recent Black Week stand out here as projects of entire customer focus. We currently focus on the so-called "RUP 2.0" project, which involves a fully automated number portability service. On the product side, this is a real game changer, which we would also like to map for the customer on the marketing side. The team has made special preparations for the advertising measures so that we can communicate the customer benefits in a targeted manner via our marketing channels.

Do you like working under pressure or prefer to get everything done on time?
Patrick:

I am a person who prefers to complete his tasks on time so that he can approach his to-dos with the necessary composure. I like it when I can rethink processes and think outside the box. This helps me immensely with my personal development. Then, of course, the occasional spontaneous to-dos are time-critical. True to our guiding principle of "agile speedboats," we try to work out the optimal workflow as quickly as possible as a team to keep a cool head even in stressful situations. Conscientious action and situationally fast decision-making have a unique appeal to me.

What professional advice would you give to your younger self?
Patrick:

Do something you enjoy and approach it with total commitment and passion. There is nothing better than being on fire for something. Then, learn from your mistakes and leave your comfort zone to become an even better version of yourself. Long term, you can be sure that your job is not only a profession, but also a vocation.
